Developed as a short course at HTB in London, in 1990 Nicky Gumbel took over running Alpha and found that many people outside of the church wanted to explore the Christian faith.

Alpha is a place to ask the big questions of life. Get together – online or in person – and watch a series of episodes that explore the basics of the Christian faith.
The Alpha course, is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith. It’s relaxed, low key, friendly and fun. Listen, learn, discuss and discover. And ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile. And it’s supported by all the main Christian denominations.
Alpha is a six week course providing the opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith, in a friendly, open, informal environment, while sharing some food.
The Alpha course looks at a series of topics, such as ‘How can I develop a relationship with God?’. After a meal together there is a short presentation, we divide into small groups for a time of informal discussion.
Alpha will be running soon. You don’t have to come to the whole course – just pop along for the first night and see what you think. No pressure.
Alpha is for everyone, especially:
•Those wanting to investigate Christianity
•New Christians
•Newcomers to church
•Those who want to brush up on the basics
No question is out of bounds and you are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish. We don’t assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity and everyone is welcome.
Relationships are exciting. They are the most
important aspect of our lives – our relationships with
our parents, boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife,
children, grandchildren, friends, and so on.
Christianity is first and foremost about relationships
rather than rules. It is about a Person more than
a philosophy. It is about the most important
relationship of all: our relationship with the God
who made us. Jesus said that the first and greatest
commandment is to love God. The second is to love
our neighbour. So, it is also about our relationships
with other people.
